As soon as she began her work at Glenkirk, Ellen became aware of the need for more music therapy research, forums, publications, and profession-wide emphasis on the unique needs of this expanding population. In this podcast, Ellen shares her observations about adults with IDD, describes Glenkirk’s services and her music therapy program, and talks about her interactions with and responses of clients in group and individual music therapy.

Ellen’s work is at Glenkirk in northern Illinois where she has a staff in Life Balance Services as well as a music therapy internship. About the Speaker

Ellen Rayfield, LCPC, MT-BC, received her Bachelor of Music Education from Northwestern University in 1973, her Music Therapy equivalency from Michigan State University in 1975, her MA in Counseling from Northeastern Illinois University in 2004, and her Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor certification in 2006. She was a music therapist at Illinois State Psychiatric Institute from 1980 to 1994. Ellen transferred to University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago in 1994 where she was Music Therapist, Counselor, and Director of Clinical Training program for AMTA National Roster Internship Program. From 1994 to 2009, she provided music therapy services to inpatient psychiatric and medical units, outpatient psychiatric, individual therapy for inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services, and trained 45 music therapy interns. In 2010, Ellen began services as music therapist for adults with IDD at Glenkirk where she developed the music therapy program for clients in both group and individual sessions. She also has a MT intern program at Glenkirk. Ellen has been active in the American Music Therapy Association, the Illinois Association for Music Therapy, the Great Lakes Region of AMTA, and the Illinois Counseling Association. She has presented sessions and institutes at AMTA conferences, Great Lakes AMTA, World Congress of Music therapy, the UIC Medical Center, and the American Psychiatric Association.
